Liebe Dharmafreunde,
der 24. Februar ist der Vorabend des Tibetischen Neujahrs, der letzte Tag des Jahres der Ratte. Es scheint passend, dass eine weltweite Wirtschaftsrezession unserem Eintritt in das Jahr der Kuh voraus geht, einem Jahr, das uns charakteristischer Weise dazu aufruft, in unseren Anstrengungen unerschütterlich zu sein und beständig in unseren Bemühungen. Der Überfluss des Jahres der Ratte weicht der harten Arbeit des Jahres der Kuh, das ein Jahr der Achtsamkeit und Geduld ist. Wie jeder Neuanfang ist dies auch eine Zeit für uns, um als Sangha zusammen zu kommen und darüber zu reflektieren, was im vergangenen Jahr geschehen ist, und um eine Vision davon entstehen zu lassen, wohin wir uns in dem vor uns liegenden Jahr bewegen wollen
Das Jahr der Ratte begann am siebten Februar. Dies war das erste Mal, dass wir das Jahr mit der Durchführung einer Großen Sadhana-Sor-Puja in unserem Zentrum in Duncan, British Columbia, beginnen konnten – und was für eine machtvolle Wirkung das hatte! Innerhalb von nur zwei Monaten konnten wir Pläne in die Tat umsetzen, Land zu erwerben, um dort ein Mandala zu errichten, das Retreats mit all den internationalen Nyernga-Ngakde-Schülern beherbergen können wird. Noch einmal sprechen wir allen, die zu dieser Zeit einen Beitrag geleistet haben, unseren herzlichen Dank aus. Mit vereinten Ressourcen und Anstrengungen ist es uns gelungen, ungefähr 180 000 EUR an Spenden zu beschaffen, die wir in 30 Hektar traumhaften unberührten Landes investiert haben – Land, das ein neues spirituelles und zukunftsfähiges zu Hause für all unsere Sangha werden soll.
Inmitten der großen Aufregung, die den Erwerb des Landes und die Planung der Bauvorhaben begleitete, erinnerten uns die Ereignisse, die sich am 10. März in Tibet abspielten, in ernüchternder Weise daran, wie wichtig es ist, ein spirituelles zu Hause zu errichten. Am 10. März brach in Tibet ein Aufstand aus, und viele Tibeter wurden bei dem Versuch, gegen die andauernde kulturelle Unterdrückung in ihrem Heimatland zu protestieren, gefangen genommen, einige wurden getötet. Jede/r einzelne von uns hat eine Verbindung zu den Worten des Buddha hergestellt, die einen so weiten Weg gekommen sind und so lange auf dem Dach der Welt fortgedauert haben. Jetzt, da Friede und Atmosphäre für den Dharma in Tibet kompromittiert worden sind, ist unsere Praxis von spezieller Wichtigkeit, um diese Tradition der raschen spirituellen Transformation zu unterstützen und zu erhalten.
Während des Frühlings, bis zu unserem Umzug, hat Rinpoche die Internet-Belehrungen zum „Schatz der Grundsätze“ von Longchenpa fortgeführt. Wir sind vom Glück begünstigt, den Nektar der Schriften eines der größten Meister unserer Tradition zu erhalten, mit dem Kommentar unseres eigenen kostbaren Lopon und Übersetzungen von Almut. Nach einer langen Unterbrechungszeit, während der wir mit dem Zentrum auf das neue Retreat – Land umgezogen sind, werden wir in diesem kommenden Jahr dort anfangen, wo wir letztes Mal aufgehört haben.
Der Sommer und Herbst waren eine Zeit anstrengender und harter Arbeit für die Bewohner von Nyernga Ngakde. Während wir in Zelten lebten und mit Feuer kochten, haben wir eine temporäre Gompa gebaut, sowohl eine Komposttoilette als auch ein Brunnenwasser- und Klärgruben-System. Außerdem haben wir auch unsere Telefon- und Internetkabel vergraben und installiert und unser neues zu Hause „verankert“. Da Rinpoche in seinem einzigartigen Stil unsere jährlichen Campingreisen zu unserer Schulung genutzt hatte, waren wir gut vorbereitet auf den Wechsel vom Vorortleben zur abgeschiedenen Landexistenz jenseits aller ausgetretenen Pfade. Angefangen vom Holzhacken bis zum Schleppen von 19-Liter-Behältern mit Wasser zum Kochen und Waschen haben wir nach Möglichkeit versucht, unsere Anstrengungen mit unserer Praxis und Meditation zu durchtränken. Während unserer 16-Stunden-Tage und der Sieben-Tage-Arbeitswochen haben wir einen Geschmack von der Läuterungsanwendung bekommen, die beispielhaft am besten in den Geschichten von Milarepas Ausbildung unter der Führung Marpas dargestellt wird.
Um sowohl eine geeignete Umgebung für spirituelle Praxis und Entwicklung zu schaffen als auch die Reinheit des Mandala zu erhalten, versuchen wir, die baulichen Verrichtungen auf dem Land in Übereinstimmung mit den Prinzipien der Nachhaltigkeit zu gestalten. Ein gewaltiges, 450 Quadratmeter großes Gewächshaus, das mehr als genug biologisch-organisches Essen für unsere Bewohner und Retreatler produzieren wird, ist im Entstehen. Die Energie, die wir nutzen, wird von einem Solarelemente-Netzwerk generiert, und das Wasser kommt aus einem Brunnen, den wir hier auf dem Land gegraben haben. Das Zentrum greift auf so wenig Ressourcen von außen wie möglich zurück und ist so als ein Ort konzipiert, an dem die spirituelle Gemeinschaft zusammen kommt und einen eng mit der Natur verbundenen Lebensstil annimmt, der nicht am Konsumdenken orientiert ist.
Im September, gerade als die Wasserleitungen angeschlossen wurden, ging Rinpoche wieder auf die Reise nach Europa zu seinem jährlichen Besuch bei der deutschen und Österreichischen Sangha. Vom 10. September bis zum 14. Oktober hielt er Retreats ab und gab Belehrungen. Adi und Pascal, zwei Bewohner des Zentrums hier in British Columbia, haben Rinpoche auf seiner Europatour begleitet. Sie haben verschiedene Praxisgruppen in Deutschland getroffen und die Grundlagen des traditionellen Nyingmapa-Rituals gelehrt, so, wie wir sie hier im Zentrum praktizieren.
Dann, vom 3. bis zum 10. November, ging Rinpoche nach Toronto und leitete ein Retreat für die Sangha von Ontario und hielt im Rainbowbody-Yogastudio auch verschiedene öffentliche Belehrungen zu modernen buddhistischen Themen.
Der starke Schneefall, der das Land mit einer Decke überzog und uns fast den ganzen Winter über im Haus hielt, schuf eine ruhige Atmosphäre, die ideal für ausgedehnte Meditation und Studien war. Im Januar, nachdem das Feuerholz schließlich gesammelt war, haben wir ein Praxisretreat begonnen, das bis zu der Vorbereitungszeit unserer jährlichen siebentägigen Großen Dorje-Drolo-Sadhana-Puja andauerte.
Nun schauen wir auf das vor uns liegende kommende Jahr. Was die Unterstützung durch die Sangha betrifft, wird es wieder ein entscheidendes Jahr sein. Wir bereiten bereits den Bau einer Gompa vor, die für die nächsten Jahre der zentrale Brennpunkt des Retreatzentrums sein wird. Die kleine Gompa, die wir in diesem Jahr errichtet haben, war als temporärer Tempel geeignet, aber sie kann den Ritualen und Retreats, die wir in Zukunft abhalten wollen, nicht genug Platz bieten. Parallel zu der Gompa werden wir in diesem Jahr auch unsere Unterbringungsmöglichkeiten für die Bewohner erweitern, damit wir in den folgenden Jahren so viele Sanghamitglieder wie möglich beherbergen können.
Möge jede/r einzelne von uns fortfahren, freudig bei sich selbst die rechten Bedingungen zu schaffen, damit all die Segnungen durch Rinpoche und den Dharma Früchte tragen können. Mögen wir alle einander weiterhin mit Liebe und Respekt in unseren Herzen tragen. Mögen wir als engagierte Sangha alle beständig das Glück unserer eigenen innewohnenden Buddhanatur auf eine Weise offenbaren, die alle fühlenden Wesen schnell zur Befreiung führt. Losar Message from Nyernga Ngakde Kanada

February 24th was the Tibetan New Year Eve, the last day of the year of the Rat. It seems fitting that a world economic recession precedes our entering the year of the Cow, a year that characteristically calls upon us to be steadfast in our efforts and enduring in our toil. The abundance of the Rat year is waning to make room for the hard work of the Cow year. It is a year for being attentive and patient; and like every new beginning it is also a time for us to come together as a Sangha to reflect upon what happened in the year behind us and to create the new vision of where we are going in the year ahead.
The year of the Rat began on February 7th. It was the first time that we were able to begin the New Year by performing the Grand Sadhanna Sor Puja at our center in Duncan BC - and what a powerful effect that had! Within just two months we were moving forward with plans to purchase land upon which to establish a mandala and host retreats for all the international Nyernga Ngakde students. We once again extend our many thanks to everyone who made contributions at that time.
Amid the flurry of excitement that surrounded our purchasing of the land and plans for building, the events that transpired in Tibet on March 10th brought a sobering reminder of the importance for establishing a spiritual home. On March tenth an uprising broke out in Tibet and many Tibetans were jailed and several killed in their attempts to protest against the ongoing cultural oppression in their homeland. Each one of us has made a connection to the words of the Buddha which have come so far and endured so long on the Roof of the World. Now that their peace and atmosphere for Dharma have been compromised our practice has special importance, to support and preserve this tradition of rapid spiritual transformation.
Through the Spring, up until moving, Rinpoche continued the Longchenpa Treasure of Tenets internet teachings. As one of the greatest masters in our tradition, we are fortunate to receive the nectar of his writings with commentary from our own precious Lopon and translations from Almut. This coming year we will be starting where we left off, having taken a long intermission to move the center to the new retreat land.
The summer and autumn were a time of intense hard work for the residents of Nyernga Ngakde. Living in tents and cooking by fire we built a temporary Gompa, a composting outhouse, as well as a well-water and septic system. We also dug and installed our phone and internet lines and anchored our new home. Rinpoche's unique style of training us through our annual camping trips prepared us well for the transition from the suburbs to the off-the-grid country life. >From chopping firewood to hauling five gallon buckets of water for cooking and cleaning, we tried our best to infuse our labors with our practice and meditation. Through our sixteen-hour days and seven-day weeks we got a taste of the practical purification best exemplified in the stories of Milarepa's training under Marpa's tutelage.
In order to establish a suitable environment for spiritual practice and development as well as maintain the purity of the Mandala, all of the building on the land was done in accordance with the principles of self-sustainability. A massive 5,000 sq. foot greenhouse has been begun which will produce more than enough organic food for the residents and retreatants of the center. The energy we use is generated from a network of solar panels and the water comes from a well we built here on the land.
While relying on as little outside resources as possible the center is being designed as a place for spiritual community to come together and embrace a non-consumer lifestyle intimately connected to nature.
In September, just as the water pipelines were getting connected, Rinpoche again went to Europe for his annual visit with the German and Austrian Sanghas. He led retreats and gave teachings from September 10th to October 14th. Adi and Pascal, two residents of the center here in British Columbia, accompanied Rinpoche on his European tour. They met with several different practicing groups in Germany and taught the basics of traditional Nyingmapa ritual such as we practice here at the center. Then from November 3rd to November 10th Rinpoche went to Toronto and led a retreat with the Ontario Sangha. While there, he also gave several public teachings on modern Buddhist topics at the Rainbowbody Yoga studio. The heavy snow that blanketed the land kept us indoors for most of winter and made a tranquil atmosphere, which has been ideal for extensive meditation and study. In January, after all the fire wood was finally collected, we began a practice retreat that led up until the time of preparation for our annual seven-day Dorje Drolo Grand Sadhanna Puja.
Now we look in front of us to the year ahead. It is again a crucial year for support from the Sangha. We are already beginning preparations for building a Gompa that is to become the central focus of the retreat center for years to come. The small Gompa we built this year has been suitable as a temporary temple but it can not accomodate all the rituals and retreats we will be holding in the future. In parallel to the larger Gompa, this year we will also be expanding our residential accomodations so we can host as many Sangha members as possible in the years to come.
May each and everyone of us continue to joyfully cultivate within ourselves the right conditions for all the blessings of Rinpoche and the Dharma to come to fruition. May we all continue to hold each other in our hearts with love and respect. May we all, as a commited sangha, continue to manifest the auspicioussness of our own inherent Buddha nature in a way that swiftly brings all sentient beings to liberation. And may you all enjoy a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.
